Will orchids root in water?

No, orchids won’t root in water. This is a bad idea for several reasons:

  • Constant access to water causes root rot or crown rot
  • Constant access to water doesn’t simulate an orchid’s natural conditions
  • Constant access to water isn’t necessary, and your orchid will get enough moisture even if its mix dries out between waterings (which it’s supposed to)

If you want to cause your orchid to root, trim away its flower spike. This will make it redirect its energy towards its roots and leaves.
