What does a new spike on an orchid look like?

A new orchid spike is bright green and come from the stem (the part underneath the leaves that the roots come from). As it grows longer, it becomes a darker green, and can reach 12in in length. When it starts getting ready to bloom, buds emerge from the nodes near the end and gradually get bigger.
