What are the white dots on orchid roots?

The white dots on orchid roots are pores, through which the orchid breathes (gas exchange). Orchids, like all plants, need to breathe in carbon dioxide (CO2) and release oxygen (O2). These white spots will only be visible when the root has absorbed water and turned green.
