Do orchids need soil?

No, orchids do not need soil. They’re epiphytic, meaning they grow in the air, attached to trees or rocks. The roots of an orchid are covered in a thin layer of velamen which helps them absorb water and nutrients from the air. As an indoor plant, though, it’s best to keep your orchid in potting mix like sphagnum moss.
